There’s something about the first time you hold an M1 Garand that just hits different.

For generations of Americans, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has preserved and passed along one of the most iconic service rifles ever issued: the M1 Garand. Carried across Europe and the Pacific during World War II and beyond, the Garand is more than steel and walnut. It’s memory. It’s muscle memory. It’s history you can shoulder.

The day I bought my first Garand from CMP, 25 years ago, I couldn’t wait to show my dad. The rifle came nestled in a foam-lined case, complete with a manual and certificate. CMP had assembled it using parts from three different rifles—carefully inspected, rebuilt, and brought back to full working order. It wasn’t just functional; it felt alive with stories. It became one of my honored possessions.

I drove straight to my dad’s house, dropped the tailgate, and slid the case out.

“What have you got there, son?” he asked.

“I think you might recognize this one.”

When I opened the case and handed him the rifle, something shifted. “Oh, my goodness,” he said softly. “I haven’t seen one of these in about 50 years.” He turned it over in his hands. “Looks just like mine when I was discharged. A little beat up—but perfect.”

Then, in less than 20 seconds, he field-stripped it before my eyes.

“We could all do this in the dark back then,” he said. “Our lives depended on it.”

That rifle—chambered in .30-06—wasn’t just a purchase. It was a bridge between generations.

For decades, CMP has done exactly that: inspected, rebuilt, and shipped thousands of surplus M1 Garands into the hands of collectors, competitors, and everyday Americans who want to keep history alive on the firing line. Each rifle carries the spirit of service while remaining fully capable as a precision shooting platform.

Now, CMP continues that legacy with new-production M1 Garands built for today’s marksman. These rifles honor the original design while offering modern reliability and versatility. Offered in both classic .30-06 Springfield and user-friendly .308 Winchester, the new rifles feature precision-forged receivers stamped with the distinctive CMP crest, rich walnut stocks, and the unmistakable profile that has defined American battle rifles for nearly a century.

Whether you’re a collector drawn to history, a competitive shooter chasing tight groups, or someone who simply appreciates the unmistakable metallic “ping” of an en-bloc clip ejecting, the M1 Garand by CMP delivers an experience that transcends time. It connects past and present in a way few firearms can.

The M1 Garand isn’t just remembered. Through CMP, it’s still carried, still fired, and still cherished—an unmistakably American rifle, reborn for a new generation. To learn more about the new production, visit https://thecmp.org/m1-garand-by-cmp/.
